Processing Anger

Turn from your rage! Do not lose your temper—it only leads to harm.  Psalm 37:8 When was the last time you experienced anger toward your spouse, and how did you handle it? In the next few days, I want to give you a five-step program for handling anger in a positive way. The first step is admitting to yourself that you are angry. “That’s obvious,” you might reply. “Anyone would know that I am angry.” Perhaps, but the question is, areyou conscious of your anger? Anger comes on so suddenly that often you may be caught up in a verbal or physical response before you consciously acknowledge what is going on inside you. The Scriptures never say that anger is wrong, but multiple passages talk about the importance of controlling anger. Psalm 37 speaks about avoiding rage and not losing your temper, which can harm others. When you realize you are angry, I suggest that you say these words out loud: “I am angry about this. Now what am I going to do?” You have placed the issue on the table, an...

Using Research Skills Outside Academia

So you enjoy research.  But you are unsure if an academic career is right for you.  How else can you use your research skills?  You may find a research post outside academia that uses the full range of your skills – perhaps in a biotech start-up or social policy ‘think tank’.  But these opportunities are rare, so do consider alternatives.  A good first step is to identify your strongest skills and those you most enjoy using. So find or make a skills list – the headings below are just examples – and give yourself a mark out of ten firstly for your strength (10 = strongest) in that skill and secondly for the enjoyment you derive when using it (10=most enjoyable). Most of us will have a pattern of stronger and weaker skills, and a separate pattern of those we enjoy more and those we enjoy less.  With a bit of luck we can find a match.  So think most about finding a career which values the skills you are strong in and that you enjoy using....

Time in the secret farm

So it's was great fun with the whole family at our usual holiday spot with our two dogs Asterix and Obelix. Sam really enjoyed this trip although Rato and I didn't get much alone time. But we were surprised how little time we got go en that Sam didn't want to sleep during the day, given his excitement.  Nonetheless, a great time out and a good time to get back into resting which was great.

Book review - The fifth Discipline

It must be said that reading this book all over again this past two days has rekindled a fire that had been lost the last couple of years entrenched in the rat race of chasing life. The noting that we're influenced and influencing our own reality through the rental paper of the dynamic (yet complex) system of interrelationships and patterns, is something we often don't think about. The notion that I don't have to pretend to know all the answers but rather start conversations with the role players in the system we're all part of and begin to begin to understand the cause and effects of my actions and inactions that generate and underlying pattern of behavior. It's quite clear and I need to be conscious of my passion and hunger for the reality that I wish to pursue. A reality that creates enough creative tension to continue to push me towards that lifestyle that transcends beyond my scope of influence but rather and an addition to society such that the very same pat...

Why Poor Employee Development Is a Mistake You Can't Afford

Employee Training Why Poor Employee Development Is a Mistake You Can't Afford Employee development needs to take place in a welcoming, collaborative environment. That way, everyone learns. To get started, he took a look at his workforce and identified who had untapped potential. Related:  4 Ways to Train Employees Effectively Raphael used performance metrics to decide which employees to work with one on one. He then invested time and energy in their development. But it didn’t take long before he saw he’d made a critical error. “I was focused on grooming the men and women with the best numbers,” Raphael told me in a...

Under development by Lockheed subsidiary Sikorsky Helicopters and Boeing, the futuristic helicopter comes in Assault and Attack variants that build on the X2 demonstrator that set an unofficial helicopter speed record in 2010. Like the X2 , the fly-by-wire Future Vertical Lift concept is based on a contra-rotating, co-axial rotor system combined with an aft push prop – all powered by an advanced turbine plant. According to Lockheed, this allows the concept to cruise at over 250 knots (288 mph, 464 km/h) and hover efficiently even at altitudes of 6,000 ft (1,800 m) in temp...

Pay Off Bond Or Invest? - StealthyWealth

Pay Off Bond Or Invest? 9 Comments Despite having a paid off house, getting to the front door proved difficult.  I received an interesting email from one of the readers of this blog. His suggestion was for me to do a blog post discussing paying extra into your Bond each month, versus Investing the money instead. This is a dilemma which I myself have faced before, and one that has been doing it's rounds on the internet. It was also a topic which I have had on my "ToDo" list, but the email I received increased it's priority somewhat. So let me peek under the hood... The readers email went as follows: Hi SW, I have been hammering my bond with all my extra cash in order to avoid paying huge interest for years to come. I am doing quite well and should be bond free within the next couple of years. The problem is I have no other investments i.e. Equities or savings. I am currently of the belief I need to obliterate the bond first and th...
